Night of Wolves is very standard fare fantasy fiction. The two main characters, Jerico and Darius, are paladins from competing religions who, according to their superiors, should be deadly enemies. This despite the fact that both religious sects are allegedly dedicated to protecting humanity from harm. Regardless of their sects differences, both paladins are assigned to a small village on the edge of "safe" human controlled territory..., by "The Wedge." Across the nearby river the land is controlled by other creatures, notably intelligent but vicious wolves who reside in tribes and run on two legs, as well as orcs and others. The orcs play almost no part in this first book of the series other than when the wolves stage a killing raid on one of the orcs encampments. The main background here is that the wolves, one in particular - Redclaw - wish to kill off the humans and expand their territory into the more fertile hunting grounds currently in human control. The town protected by Darius and Jerico comes under siege from the wolves and the two paladins - friends in spite of their religions - must protect it.The themes are of morality and friendship and placing right over "duty" since Darius' religious superiors want him to kill his friend and rival paladin Jerico. It also touches on lobe and loss and honor. The wolves, mainly the would be wolf king Redclaw, but a couple others as well, are almost as central to the plotlines and characters as the humans.
Overall, the story is enjoyable but predictable. The characters are likeable but thin. The underlying issues are fleshed out only narrowly. But David Dalglish has a writing style that draws you in and keeps you wanting to see what happens next. Good fantasy, not the greatest. Thus, 4 stars instead of 5.

Night of Wolves The Paladins #1 David Dalglish 9781463561529 Books Reviews
I got this book when it was offered for free. I'm glad I did because otherwise I probably wouldn't have paid to find out if it was good or not.
Surprisingly well written for a self published story, it circles around two paladins from opposite faiths. One is light while the other is dark. Even though they should be enemies, they form an easy friendship in the isolated backwater village they've been assigned agreeing to disagree.
The trouble begins when the mean, human eating wolfmen across the lake start to act up. Their leader is sick of being on the wrong side of the lake having to drink impure water and eat disgusting orcs, hyenamen and birdmen. That's just nasty, right? He wants more for his pups, so he covets the human side of the lake with their clean drinking water and abundance of tasty prey. Not to mention, a village of more than 200 would fill quite a few hungry wolfman bellies.
The paladins' only problem at that point is the wolfmen. But all too soon, a rep from the dark side arrives to the village and admonishes the dark paladin for his friendship with an enemy to their faith. The rep's timing is terrible as right before the big battle with the wolfmen, he demands the dark paladin kill his longtime friend!
Souls are searched, faiths are questioned, and battles are fought as the two paladins struggle to maintain their friendship (and their faith) in the face of adversity.
It's an entertaining read and although my taste runs to hot werewolves looking for their true mates, I enjoyed this book immensely and paid 2.99 to read the next book in the series! I surprised MYSELF with that, but I want to know what happens to these two confused and very lost men.
I gave only four stars because it started of a little slow for me, however, I do highly recommend reading this book.
Two paladins from rival religions - Jericho for the God of Compassion, Ashur, and Darius for the God of Order, Karak - have been stationed in the small town of Durham. The men are very different - Jericho red-haired and bluff, Darius dark and charismatic and both have been given the task of proselytizing to the villages and converting as many as they can to their own religion. However, when the wolf-men living across the river in an forsaken region know as the Wedge, begin to raid Durham, the two must ally to protect the village. And with Redclaw, the self-proclaimed Wolf King, uniting the tribes of wolf-men, the threat not just to the village, but the whole land of humans is much greater than they ever expected...
Night of the Wolves is a enjoyable read - fast-paced, well written, with engaging characters. The threat from the wolf men feels real and visceral, the pace is non-stop and I found I could not put it down - I was so caught up in the fate of the paladins and the villagers of Durham. Even the wolf-men, the villains of the piece, are brought to life and made so believable you can empathize with their plight, even while reviling their blood-thirsty ways. Their leader, Redclaw, with his desire to unit his people, prevent 'wolf killing wolf' and lead them to a better life - with good food to eat and green spaces to raise their cubs is a worthy adversary for our two heroes.
It is the first in a series of four books following our two heroes and I look forwarding to reading the rest
